Richmond upon Thames flies the flag high
Residents in Richmond upon Thames will be celebrating the Jubilee and Olympics in style this summer thanks to a grant from Richmond Council for the Borough’s fourteen ‘villages’.
Flags and bunting will decorate local high streets and provide some extra colour to community street parties. The decorations have been made possible thanks to grants from the Council’s Town Centre Opportunities Fund to each of the borough’s villages.
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Strategic Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture said:
“The Diamond Jubilee is particularly special for a borough like Richmond with so many Royal connections and we really want our residents to come together and take part in the celebrations and to feel a real sense of community for this important moment in history. I am delighted that we have been able to make a small grant to each of our main high streets and shopping parades and I know that these will also help to make our borough look fabulous during this summer’s Olympic events. I hope that all residents will able to get involved in a local Jubilee or Olympics celebration.”
One of the recipients of the grant money is the Teddington Business Community. In Teddington the funding has been used for Union Jack flags and bunting along the high street. A spokesperson from the Teddington Business Community said:
"The Teddington Business Community is extremely grateful to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Town Centre Opportunities Fund for making a donation to support our Olympic celebrations. We shall be putting this towards a fantastic display of patriotic flags above all the retail shops in the High Street and Broad Street, plus a prominent display of bunting over retail shops in Stanley Road, Waldegrave Road, Church Road, Park Road, The Causeway and Kingston Road, bringing the whole town together."
