These resources, written by teachers are designed to help promote a positive image of cycling to young people and to encourage pupils to learn and continue to ride their bikes more often. The pack covers literacy, numeracy, history, geography, science, art, ICT, citizenship, PE, and design technology. It also contains resources for giving assemblies, PowerPoint presentations and holding competitions.

This suite of resources provides a wealth of useful tips, advice and information for parents/carers, teachers and pupils to ensure a safe, happy and sustainable transition from primary to secondary school.

Designed by Ecolocal, the aim of this pack is to involve pupils in the development of a WoW Walking Zone around their school.

Theatre in Education

For all schools

Theatre in Education plays an important part in the promotion of sustainable travel for children to encourage them to use other modes of transport other than the car.

Theatre groups visit schools in the borough to perform plays about subjects such as road safety and sustainable travel.

In March 2010, 20 schools received a performance of ‘What if it rains?’ by Quantum Theatre. These performances were funded through the small grant scheme.

TfL’s Theatre in Education Road Safety programme is currently on hold for the 2010/11 school year.

However, in February and March 2011 schools will be offered a further chance of a visit from a theatre company.

Every Journey Matters

Written, edited and designed by a team of young people, the Every Journey Matters book explores the different ways children from around the world travel to school without harming the environment. From camels to canoes or via a rope pulley across a ravine, pupils will learn from real examples. Visit the Every Journey Matters  website.

Journey Times media studies

KS 3 and 4

The Journey Times project enables young people to explore ideas and experiences relating to travel and transport by creating a short documentary film.

The teaching resource and accompanying DVD provide a series of examples for practical activities to help young people make their own films as well as engage in discussion about the films created by other schools.

The resource includes lessons on running the project with students who have Special Educational Needs. More information can be found on the Screen Online website under Journey Times.
