Young Drivers aged 17 – 24

Casualties on the roads involving young drivers are disproportionate to the number of young people who hold a licence and the first two years of driving (in particular those first six months) are critical. 17 – 24 year olds make up only 8% of UK licence holders, yet are involved in over 30% of all collisions.

There are, of course, many reasons for this: both biological (to do with brain development relating to risk taking) and the lack of driving experience.

Latest research shows that eight out of ten parents of new drivers are concerned that their son or daughter may be involved in a car crash within the next 12 months.

The Safety Education Team offers pre-driver classroom based lessons to KS4 pupils (15-16 year olds) in the Borough through their schools. These lessons address some aspects of young drivers’ behaviour before they get behind the wheel themselves or become regular passengers with their driver friends.
