Vintage entertainment brings Jubilee Gardens to life
A week of performance and workshops at the former Twickenham Lido has been a big hit with visitors.
Over 1000 people attended Dear Lido, a series of workshops and performances inspired by stories and memories of the former Twickenham Lido site. Resident choreographer Rosie Whitney-Fish, Dear Lido artists and vintage volunteers ran a series of fun workshops everyday on the embankment. Activities such as bunting-making, creating foam ice cream cones and vintage hair and make-up sessions were popular with young visitors.
The week of activities, part of Richmond’s Summer Festival, culminated in packed site-specific performances on the weekend where Rosie and her performers brought Twickenham Lido back to life in a series of theatrical performances.
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council’s Strategic Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture said:
“Dear Lido was a spectacular success. Bunting, tea parties and theatrical antics brought Twickenham Lido back to its former glory. As well as showcasing local history, the event made theatre and performance fun for everyone.
“In true vintage style the organisers put on a fantastic show and I congratulate them on this successful event.”
Rosie Whitney- Fish, Choreographer of Dear Lido, said:
“Lidos were originally built as an inner city oasis' providing entertainment, fitness and escape. There are currently 300 functioning Lidos in the UK, and over 700 disused. When I first visited a lido it presented a natural theatre - the swimmers, the bathers, the life-guards and cafe attendants, it was full of life and bursting with theatricality. Each lido is different in its architecture, has a unique history and brings about a totally different set of stories.
“I was inspired by this and knew I could create theatrical spectacles related to each lido and its community – it’s exciting as each show will be totally unique.”
