Twickenham traders win Diamond Jubilee Shopping Parade competition
A group of six traders from Church Street in Twickenham have won a visit to the House of Lords as the guests of Lord True, Leader of Richmond Council after winning the Diamond Jubilee Shopping Parade Competition.
The event, organised by Richmond Borough in Bloom, highlights how floral displays can enhance the shopping experience for residents and visitors alike. The horticultural efforts of traders in various shopping areas across the borough were judged in three categories.
Church Street won the largest group category (41 or more properties) and was also the overall competition winner. In addition to the House of Lords visit, the Church Street Traders Association will receive a commemorative trophy from Richmond Borough in Bloom and £500, sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services, for the further enhancement of their parade.
East Twickenham Traders Association came second in this category for the parade of shops in Richmond Road leading to Richmond Bridge and will receive a cash prize of £250.
Hampton Village Traders Association scooped two group wins, their shopping parades in the Station Road area winning Group 1 (for 6-20 properties), and the Ashley Road/Station Approach area winning Group 2 (for 21-40 properties). Each area will receive £500 sponsored again by Veolia Environmental Services. Second place goes to Kew Royal Parade/Station Parade in Group 1, winning £250.
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council’s Strategic Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture, joined the judging team last week (July 26) with horticulturalists Reg Leach and Graham Golledge, and Borough in Bloom members Sheena Harold and Pat Schooling.
Cllr Fleming said: “This has been another fantastic year for Richmond Borough in Bloom, and businesses have excelled at showcasing the Borough’s shopping areas through creative and outstanding displays of colour.
“Given this very unique year with the Royal visit, Jubilee celebration and the excitement of all the Olympic events taking place in the borough, bringing more visitors than ever, it is a great credit to our local traders that they have worked so hard to make their parades even more attractive.
Thanks to the talent and tireless work by our green-fingered business community, Richmond upon Thames is looking brighter and welcoming for both our international guests and our residents.”
Pat Schooling, Richmond Borough in Bloom committee chairman said: “For many years Church Street has been admired for the way floral display is used to help draw in the customers and in this Diamond Jubilee year the traders have excelled themselves. The success of Hampton Village Traders is also quite remarkable, especially as this area has been without any bloom at all until now.”
