Extra support to access health services
What’s available?
People with learning disabilities may have additional health problems and some may need extra support to access important health services. This could be due to difficulties in communication or because people are not made aware of the free services that are available to them.
Community nurses can offer support to manage some medical conditions, help with care planning and arrange routine health screening, behavioural and dysphagia assessments. Psychometric assessments and advice on emotional difficulties including anxiety, anger, bereavement and relationships are also offered.
Who can get it?
Health support is available for people aged 18 or over who have a learning disability and usually live in the borough.
As a learning disability is usually present from childhood, this would normally be people who are already receiving other services from us. If not, we would need to carry out an assessment.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for health assessments and services.
