Health walks
Regular walking can prevent a number of serious health problems such as heart disease or diabetes. “Health walks” are free organised walks led by trained volunteers for people who are currently not very active but would like to do more. These gentle walks take place in groups and provide a safe and social atmosphere. The current walks are generally between 45-70 minutes long and with at least two walk leaders at the front and the back, people are encouraged to go at a pace that is comfortable for them.
How can I join a health walk?
If you are interested in joining one of the health walks, simply come along to the starting point 10 minutes before the stated start time. The first time you attend you will be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire.
You can access a weekly walks programme online for information on the days, times and start locations of the walks or download a walk programme which includes maps of all starting locations.
Contact the Health Improvement Team for further information on joining the health walks.
Are the walks wheelchair accessible?
For information on accessibility for wheelchairs and pushchairs, talk to the Health Development Team. We would also be grateful if you could contact us before attending your first walk if you have a disability and might benefit from additional assistance on the walks.
Becoming a leader
We are always looking for new walk leaders to help us continue the current programme and expand it. If you are already active or if you have been attending the walks for a while and are interested in becoming a leader please contact the Health Improvement Team to find out when the next training course is.
