Residents are being urged to take advantage of the wide range of services available in the borough for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The call comes from Richmond Council and Richmond Adult Community College ahead of Deaf Awareness Week, which runs from 5-11 May.
Residents can join a five-week introductory sign language course starting Wednesday, 11 June.
A six week certificate in Awareness and Communication begins Thursday, 5 June. This is a nationally accredited qualification giving an insight into the day-to-day experiences of deaf people.
From September, a number of sign language classes will be offered, including British Sign Language Level 2.
All courses are being held at the Richmond Adult Community College campus in Parkshot.
Deaf and deaf-blind residents are also encouraged to take advantage of the Council’s resource room in the Sheen Lane Centre, where they can try out a variety of equipment.
Cllr Denise Carr, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing, said:
“The Council, together with Richmond Adult Community College, provides a range of services to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
“Deaf Awareness Week is the ideal time to take a look at what is available and I urge all residents to take advantage of the opportunities and advice on offer.”
