First anniversary of Richmond and Wandsworth Councils shared staff team

Richmond and Wandsworth councils are today marking the one year anniversary of the creation of a shared staff workforce serving both boroughs, a move that will deliver savings of £10m a year for each Council.

On 3 October 2016 staff from both councils came together to be jointly employed by both authorities, managed by a single Chief Executive, Paul Martin.

The creation of a single workforce serving both authorities is a key element of the saving plans across both boroughs.  Since the launch, there has been a focus on identifying further opportunities for further savings to reduce overheads, for example by getting better deals from suppliers and making better use of our estate.

Over the past twelve months, this can be seen through many joint procurements including procurement of a variety of public health contracts, new joint IT systems and contracts, joint professional property services and more which are saving the councils in excess of £1m. A wide range of collaborative procurement exercises are underway or planned which are anticipated to deliver further savings through aggregation of the Councils requirements.

The Leader of Richmond Council, Cllr Paul Hodgins, said:

“By 2019 we will have lost 66% of our Government funding. We have needed to make savings to preserve front line services for residents. We have always said that we wanted to do as much of this as possible by sharing staffing costs with others. This approach will deliver greater efficiencies, share expertise and importantly save public money. 

“The standards of our services remain high. This is to the great credit of the staff in the shared staffing team. All have worked hard to make the joint workforce possible, without letting the quality of the outstanding service they give to local people drop.”

The Leader of Wandsworth Council, Ravi Govindia, added:

"We continuously challenge ourselves to provide the best services at the lowest cost. Our goal is always resident satisfaction at a price taxpayers can afford to pay.”
