The London Borough of Richmond created the exciting Making Business Greener scheme to encourage businesses to understand and measure their carbon footprint. The aim is to help them thrive in a changing landscape while also helping them take advantage of the benefits of sustainability, such as reduced energy bills and increased engagement.

About the scheme

Making Business Greener is a joint initiative, launched by Richmond Council in partnership with Green Mark. It offers the opportunity for businesses to understand and improve their environmental impact, and develop a structured framework for fostering sustainable business growth.

Businesses can fully control their environmental impact through an on-site audit conducted by the Green Mark sustainability professionals, pledging to improve their sustainability, carbon calculations, and the action-driven Green Mark Accreditation program. As part of its initiatives, the council aims to provide support and establish a network of businesses working together to make the borough greener.

How to qualify

To qualify for the Making Businesses Greener Scheme your business must be an SME with five to one hundred employees. This accreditation helps businesses to:

  • Understand the environmental impacts and take easy steps to reduce their environmental impacts
  • Communicate their sustainability efforts to their customers and other key stakeholders
  • Optimise efficiency and reduce costs

With just eight to twelve hours spread over six weeks, your business will be accredited and awarded a certification pack, which includes badges and certificates that can be displayed on storefronts and websites, providing a visible and recognisable symbol of your sustainable achievements and commitment to reducing your environmental impact.
