Legible London

Richmond and Twickenham town centres are the first outer London areas to partner Transport for London (TfL) in Legible London, a new London pedestrian signage system.

Legible London signs feature detailed maps of the local area with five and fifteen minute walking circles to show the neighbourhoods and destinations within easy reach. By providing better quality pedestrian information we hope to encourage more people to walk, and help them find their destinations quickly and easily. 48 new signs will be located in and around Richmond and Twickenham town centres, some of which look like this

Each sign location has been carefully selected to provide pedestrians with information at a key point during their journey. You may have already come across these coverplates

on the ground in the town centres. They represent the locations of Legible London products and will be removed once the signs are installed.

With around 4 million tourists visiting our historic Borough each year Legible London will provide information to pedestrians about the wealth of retail, leisure and tourism opportunities available, some of which may have previously been unknown and most of which can be reached on foot from the town centres.

Innovative solutions have been developed to suit the Borough’s geographic identity which is much different from the urban landscape of central London. The arrival of Legible London is very timely as it complements current and planned environmental and highways improvements and our clutter reduction programme. The majority of existing street signs will be removed following the installation of Legible London products during December 2009 and January 2010.

Legible London will complement the work of Smarter Travel Richmond (STR), a three year, £4.2m programme funded by TfL - one of the largest schemes of its kind anywhere in the world. The programme aims to significantly increase the number of trips made on foot, by bike and on public transport in order to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions, which contribute to climate change. The two initiatives therefore go hand in hand to help make the borough the greenest in London by 2012.
