Joining a library

How to join Richmond Libraries

It is easy to join the Library, you can visit any of our library branches or join online.

When you join online will be given a temporary membership number which will allow you to start using our online services and to reserve items you would like to borrow. You will need to bring your temporary registration number, together with proof of your name and current address to a library to convert to a permanent membership.

Permanent membership

To obtain permanent membership of the library service you will need to visit a library and show proof of name and address - any of the following is acceptable:

  • Current driving licence
  • Recent utility bill
  • Council Tax bill
  • Recent bank/credit card statement

Children under the age of 18 years will also need their application countersigned by a parent or guardian.

On completion a library card and a PIN will be issued which will enable you to borrow up to a maximum of 20 items including audio visual material.

Your card will also allow you to use a public computer terminal in libraries and use the 24/7 electronic services from home.

Temporary membership

Temporary membership is for adults who are new to the area, do not have proof of address or unaccompanied children. A library card and a PIN will be issued which will enable you to borrow a maximum of 5 books.

Your card will also allow you to use a public computer terminal in libraries and use the 24/7 electronic services from home.

A temporary card is valid for 6 months but can be converted into permanent membership by adults showing official proof of address (as listed above) and children obtaining a counter signature.
