Save Barn Elms campaign one step closer
The campaign to save Barn Elms has moved a step closer to success as Thames Water confirmed that the playing fields will not be the first choice location for a major construction site for its ‘super sewer’.
The water company says that feedback from the second stage consultation on the Thames Tunnel project has confirmed that a brownfield site in south Fulham is a more suitable location.
The original construction plan for tunnel had ear-marked Barn Elms as a main drive shaft site. The proposal after the first round has a much smaller construction compound to allow a connection to the super sewer next to the Beverly Brook. As a result of the stage two consultation feedback, Thames Water has proposed a series of changes which includes an alternative access road for Barn Elms and amendments to the scale and design of the permanent structures on the site.
Cllr Virginia Morris, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:
“Over the past few years residents in our borough have tirelessly campaigned to save Barn Elms from what would potentially be an unacceptable loss of green space. Together with Richmond and neighbouring Councils, we have lobbied to make sure everyone knows that selecting Barn Elms for one of the super sewer tunneling sites would be a big mistake.
“I am pleased that the company has listened and they have rethought their proposals. However, we must not be complacent – we now have to fully review the proposed changes in detail and ensure that any proposal affecting residents in our borough will have no or a limited impact.”
