Getting copies of certificates
Registers containing events which occurred in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames are held at the Richmond upon Thames Register Office. The records date from the onset of formal registration in 1837 up to the present day (excluding the period 1934-1965 for marriage entries).
How to apply for certificates
Applications can be made by telephone on 020 8940 2853 or 020 8940 2651 by debit / credit card. There is a handling charge of 1.8% for credit card payments but no charge for debit card.
Alternatively you can apply in person or by post.
Please make cheques payable to the 'London Borough of Richmond upon Thames'.
If you require a certificate for an event occurring outside of the Richmond upon Thames district, you will need to apply to the register office within the district in which the event occurred. Alternatively visit the General Register Office.

Information required for certificates
In order to obtain certified copies of certificates, certain information will be required:
Marriage certificates
- Forenames and surnames of the couple at the time of the marriage
- Surname in which the lady contracted her marriage
- Date of marriage
- Name of place of marriage (Register Office, name of church or other licensed venue)
Death certificates
- Forename and surname (and any other names used) at the time of death
- Date of death
- Place of death
Birth certificates
- Forename and surname (and any other names used) at the time of birth
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Mothers and fathers full names
- Mothers maiden surname
Civil Partnership certificates
- Name and surname of each of the couple at the time of the civil partnership
- Date of civil partnership
- Place of civil partnership
There are two types of certificate following a civil partnership. One version includes the partners’ addresses at the time of registration and the other does not. If you wish to apply for a certificate with addresses, you must provide the addresses of both civil partners as recorded at the time the partnership was registered.

The office is open from 9:00am until 4:00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and from 9:00am until 12:30pm on Wednesdays.
The office is closed from 12:30pm on Wednesdays and is closed on all bank holidays.
