Fields of Vision: Landscapes Past and Present
28 January - 15 April 2012
Orleans House Gallery presents Fields of Vision: Landscapes Past & Present, an exhibition that juxtaposes historical and contemporary works of naturalistic and urban landscapes, depicted in a wide range of media including painting, sculpture, photography and film. The exhibition brings together works from the Richmond Borough Art Collection, works by invited artists and works of local and national artists selected via open submission.
Throughout history artists have idealised, documented and explored the landscape and how we, as humans relate to and affect it. From the painted Arcadian visions of Nicholas Poussin, to the photographic urban landscapes of Henri Cartier Bresson, social and economic development influences and changes landscapes, as it also affects the way in which artists document them. A subject matter with endless and everchanging resources to explore, it has provided a source of inspiration for many great works of art. Landscape art is a hugely significant part of local and international art history.
The beautiful views and rich local history of Richmond and Twickenham have inspired historical and contemporary artists alike. Although there is an emphasis on local views, the exhibition includes landscapes of other geographical locations including New York and Ireland.
