Transition: leaving school
Many young people with a statement of educational need will leave school at age 16, moving on to college, work or further education. In this case their statement is likely to be rescinded and they move onto adulthood without specialist support.
For others particularly people with higher needs they may stay in a specialist education setting longer and therefore have continued support and may have specialist support into adulthood.
Planning for either scenario and consideration of all options should start at the Year 9, Transition review at age 14 in school.
The Leaving school – What next? leaflet
(pdf, 197KB) gives information about options and support to help you plan. The My Review planning document
(pdf, 311KB) can help you to plan what you want for the future.
