Training to foster
Fostering team update:
‘Skills to Foster’
If you’ve had the initial visit from the fostering team, and you agree the next step would be to join the course, please let us know.
Our next 'Skills to Foster' training will take place on the Friday 19, Saturday 20 and Saturday 27 April.
Fostering is increasingly seen as a profession, and as such there is a range of training available to foster carers, with opportunities to complete NVQs or equivalent qualifications.
Before the assessment
You will be invited to complete the ‘Skills to Foster’ course, developed by the Fostering Network.
The Skills to Foster course usually takes three to four days, and is lead by fostering team social workers and experienced foster carers. Children who have been fostered, as well as the sons and daughters of carers, attend to give you their insights and experiences.
They will take you through six to seven sessions, which usually cover:
- What foster carers do
- Identity and life chances
- Working together
- Understanding children in foster care
- Safer caring
- My family fosters - a workshop for the sons and daughters of prospective foster carers to explain what foster care is and what it could mean for them. These workshops are arranged as needed.
During the assessment
For new carers in their first year (including assessment time) the Standards Portfolio has to be completed. This provides a national minimum standard, setting out what foster carers should know, understand and be able to do within the first 12-18 months after approval. The Standards Portfolio is a mandatory requirement, and is completed during the assessment period and the first year of approval with the support of a fostering team social worker.
Once a carer is approved
Once approved, training will take place throughout the year to develop new carers’ skills, as well as support them for their yearly fostering review.
The fostering team will help and advise you on what courses would best suit your skills and development. Training can take place throughout the working week, during evenings as well as at weekends.
If you would like to find out more about the Skills to Foster course, or to request an information pack, please contact our fostering team who will be happy to supply more detail.
