The Richmond upon Thames Children’s Disability Register
We hold the Children's Disability Register to ensure that we appropriately reflect the needs of children with disabilities in our planning. All local authorities are required by the Children Act 1989 to hold a register of disabled children. Each authority defines their own eligibility and has different benefits from registering.
One of the new benefits is children eligible to register will have access to the grants programmes and support from Aiming High for Disabled Children. Registered families will receive an identity card for the disabled child that can help the family get concessions, for example for leisure activities. Families will get information twice a year about the options available to disabled children in relation to short breaks and fun activities.
To be considered for the register families need to complete an application form. The form needs to include the details of a relevant doctor who can verify the child’s needs. If the Disabled Children’s Panel agree that a child is registerable, it is up to the family if they would like to be added to the register.
