Health Walks
Regular walking can prevent a number of serious health problems such as heart disease or diabetes. Health Walks are free, organised walks led by trained volunteers for people who are currently not very active but would like to do more. These gentle walks take place in groups and provide a safe and social atmosphere.
Our current walks are generally between 45 to 70 minutes long, and have at least two Walk Leaders - one at the front and one at the back. You are encouraged to go at a pace that is comfortable for them. Shorter and slower walks are also available for beginners and those with limiting health conditions.
There are walks every day of the week throughout the year except Saturdays and public holidays. See the timetable for more details.
How are Health Walks run?
Walks are run by volunteer Health Walk Leaders who also administer the scheme. The scheme is managed by the Ramblers and funded by the Council and NHS South London. The walks are free and open to all. The Ramblers is Britain's walking charity and has been working for over 75 years to promote walking and to improve conditions for everyone who walks in England, Scotland and Wales.
How can I join a Health Walk?
If you are interested in joining one of the health walks, simply come along to the starting point 10 minutes before the stated start time. The first time you attend you will be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire.
A national initiative - "Walking the way to health"
The health walks scheme in Richmond is part of the national initiative being coordinated by Natural England, the British Heart Foundation and other partners. It aims to help improve the health and fitness of people who do little exercise through the promotion of regular walking. For information on the initiative and other schemes around the country, visit the Walking for Health website.
